Briana's Op-Ed Rough Draft.

I think that recycling in Missoula should be a lot different than it is. Right now it is really hard and inconvenient to recycle. I believe that it is truly important to start talking better care of our planet, and a good first step would be for each one of us in every household in Missoula to start recycling everything we can.

In cities across America recycling in mandatory, I recently visited Boulder, Colorado for ten days, and while staying in the home of a close friend I learned that they are required to recycle everything, including things that can be composted, and unlike Missoula it is picked up and sorted for you (other than the compostable materials). I was very surprised at the effort those living in Boulder are taking to make it a greener town, and it made me want to find out why Missoula isn’t following Boulders lead.
While researching what options there are for the average Missoulian to recycle I found out that we do have curb side pickup for recycled goods such as paper, plastic and metals, but not glass and they things you are recycling have to be perfectly sorted and only come once per month I know that it only takes a little extra effort to sort out the things you wish to recycle but I think that it’s that extra bit of effort that may turn people away. I have to admit it is a whole lot easier to just throw everything in one can and take it to the dumpster.
I would like to see Missoula take charge of our future and start to implement the same recycling plan as places like Boulder, CO. I think it should be mandatory to recycle and that it should be made easier and more convenient for the recycler, so that more people will be inclined to do it and appreciate it more.

  1. I think this is a great start to your essay. Some things to think about could be identifying specific thing that we could do to make people more aware of the problem with recycling. Also, what ways can the people of Missoula spread the word that there is in fact recycling available? Great start though!

  2. I really like your topic! I'm from California where we have CRV which is a cash return value for aluminum and plastic bottles. We pay the value when we buy aluminum or bottles and then if we recycle them after at a variety of recycling spots we get our CRV back. It isn't very much, only a few cents a can but over time adds up. And really keeps people recycling, especially college kids. This could be relevant for your paper.
