Free Write for Tuesday 3/27

    1. Poetry can be a great way to both bring yourself into your writing and also connect big topics with your personal life in powerful ways. So for today's free write we'll be writing a poem.
    2. Read the poem "Birds of Darkness Inhabit the Night, Stars on their Foreheads" by Beckian Fritz Goldberg to get you thinking. Try to notice how the author ties the abstract experience and thinking on loss and mourning to his daily life.
    3. Write one abstract word that your research so far centers on.
    4. Free write a list of concrete images about this word 5-10, but not using the word itself. Use it's like, and it's not like,  to try and describe the abstract thing. For example, if I were writing on extinction I might make a list like so:
      • It's like hiking along side a river and hearing no birds.
      • It's not like coming on you covered in frogs, all your eyes closed.
      • It's like getting the call my grandfather has died after not seeing him for a year. I still imagine he's here, but he's gone.
      • And so on.
    5. Free write on what you did last night before bed, or any other seemingly mundane activity. Write in lines and try to be specific and vivid in your details. For example, rather than writing I brushed my teeth spend a while describing how it felt, what your bathroom looks like, what it smells like, what your toothpaste tastes like, etc. Be sure to write in line breaks.
    6. Combine the two. See if you can mix the similes into your experience from last night in a productive way.
