Free Write for Tuesday 3/1

1. Invention: Who are you, what groups or places do you belong to, what do you care about that you think other people should care more about? Are you a kayaker and do you care about protecting rivers? Are you a snowboarder and should you do more about climate change because of it? Are you from Butte and do you believe people need to the learn the lessons the Berkley Pit taught you? Do you think more needs to be done to prevent sexual assault?
  • Make a list of the things you identify as or are passionate about
  • For each one, think about if there's anything you feel needs to change to make it better
  • From the topics where you feel like things need to change, make a list of who you need to convince to make changes

2. Pick one or two topics and free write
  • Who would be my ideal audience for this argument?
  • How can I reach the people who can make these changes?
  • How is my audience going to feel about hearing what I have to say?
  • How do I inspire them to change?
  • What stories do I know that would change someone's mind?
  • Where can I find evidence or facts that would convince people?
  • How do I convince people to believe and listen to me? What do I know they don't? Where does my authority on the issue come from?
  • What points do I have to make in a short essay to change their minds?
