PAA Rough Draft 1

Annaleigh Newall
March 30, 2012
Writ. 101 PAA Rough Draft 1
What are the effects of fast food on American obesity?
Living in the United States, we see it all around us. Obesity is everywhere we look. It’s near impossible to go a day without seeing somebody who is obese.  Even the people, who don’t look to be obese, are. Even me, at age 18 and dancing 20 hours a week and going to the gym regularly am considered to be obese. So what makes our country to the point that we are able to become obese so easily? When I first was choosing a topic, I had absolutely no idea what to write on. I wanted to be sure I would be able to find research on my topic, but still keep my reader engaged and have it pertain to everyone somehow. Obesity isn’t something that just pertains to one person, but to every single person in the United States. We have all seen the obese people and tell ourselves that we don’t want to end up that way. But what can be done to fix the problem? Why should you care? Honestly, look around you. Obesity is a serious problem and we need to do something about it.
When I was in high school, I took 3 years of sports medicine and exercise science classes, determined to somehow work that form of work into what I was going to do with my life. Once a year in the spring came the time every single person in the entire class dreaded; measuring BMI, taking skin folds, and finding out if we were or were not obese. Every year when we tested for obesity, the results were always surprising. Our football quarterback was obese, the track star was obese, even I, a dancer dancing 27 hours a week, was considered obese. The hardest part of this part of class was the self-esteem factors that came along with finding out that the majority of our class as obese. It was always hard to find out that we were in fact, not as healthy as we thought we were. Our teacher always had to give everyone the classis pep-talk about how it’s not what the scale says, but how we feel about ourselves and that we are eating a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables and feeling good about ourselves was what mattered most.

Reflect on the structure of Karen Pryor's "Reaching Minds". If you'd like to, take a minute to glance back through the essay looking at how the sections are formed and noticing how the essay charts her research into and experience with positive reinforcement. Notice how the essay is broken into manageable sections by topic and often by question.

Write a project narrative. This is outlined on CW 424, which you can take a look at before you begin or at the very least as part of your homework over break, but I'll briefly outline the key components here:

  • Use your FQ as the title
  • Then tell the story of your thinking about your FQ and your topic from the beginning of your research to now
  • If you have direct experience with the topic, tell those stories as well
  • Discuss how your working knowledge of the topic has changed
  • As you finish for homework, feel free to quote, paraphrase, and summarize your research, but be sure to cite as you do

The article goes over coal historical coal production in the United States and attempts to predict the future coal production as well as providing an estimate of possible coal production regardless of economic or political factors. (26) The author states:
"Using the recoverable reserves as an estimate of what is realistically available for production will yield a coal output of around 1400 Mt by 2030 through the rest of the century. This would require a massive development of the coal reserves in Montana, as they are the largest undeveloped reserves remaining for future exploitation. Unless this happens, US coal production could reach a peak around 2030."

The author states that the most likely source of the reduction in coal usage will be the introduction of alternatives such as nuclear and wind as the easy to reach coal is depleted and become price competitive.

In the article " Does Father Absence Place Daughters at Special Risk for Early Sexual Activity and Teenage Pregnancy?" written by Bruce J. Ellis, talks about that an absent father creates added stress to the family and can be linked to early sexual activity and teenage pregnancy. This article uses many studies done America and New Zealand to make its argument that the younger a girl is when her father leave the picture the more likely she is to be sexually active at a young age. Ellis states, " adolescent pregnancy rates were approximately  7 times higher in the U.S. sample and 8 times higher in the New Zealand sample among early father-absent girls than among father present girls" (811).

The argument over environment vs Genetics has been discussed and researched in every way possible. The importance of being raised in a secure environment vs the importance of being raised by your own blood. However in this article that I have found they expressed a new way to approach the subject with the use of and. Nature and nurture. Obviously both aspects for childhood development are very important. However I think that this an important outlook that most people need to consider. How do Genetics play in the role of environment?

Major Media Bias is very influential in the majority of things happening in the political scene in the United States today. Major News corporations often ignore many things or highlight certain things to brush other topics under the rug for certain motives. In the book Marketing Sceince written by Miklos Sarvary he says that bias is a product of people wanting to see news that that makes them feel good.

The support or rejection, in terms of numbers, concerning abortion has not changed dramatically through poles taken since the 1970's as an article on jstor.org called "Changing Frameworks in Attitude Towards Abortion" by Jennifer Stickler and Nicholas Danigelis states. There are still relatively the same number of people in the U.S. on either side of the line, and most are "characterized as ambivalent." Their poles do say, however, that the types of people on either side have shifted depending on many factors such as their values, beliefs, and education. For example, highly educated people tend to support legal abortion. "Luker offers a very compelling argument for why highly educated women support abortion; they are more likely to engage in meaningful activities other than motherhood. Because of their broader view of acceptable women's roles, highly educated women are more likely to see unwanted pregnancies as potentially threatening to a woman't well-being."

5 focusing questions

Main Question: Is the older drinking age in the US beneficial to me in comparison to the lower drinking age in Europe?

Focus Questions:
1)    When was the drinking age in the US established?

-The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 required all states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol age to 21. States that did not comply faced a reduction in highway funds under the Federal Highway Aid Act. The U.S. Department of Transportation has determined that all states are in compliance with this act.

Write a list of follow up questions to your focusing question. Think of this like an interview you're conducting with the world. Be sure to stick to a similar topic.

Research based on your focusing questions. Start with wikipedia or google scholar, and as you go keep track of what you find out like you would if you were transcribing an interview (or like you did in the previous homework). If it'd be helpful, conduct an interview with someone knowledgeable about the topic (refer to the EW 166 for strategies). Type the question and then a blurb of a paragraph or so on what you discover. Be sure and copy down the url for any site you visit, and the pertinent info to cite any other kinds of sources you use.

2. For those of you who did your HW: Kudos! Pick the topic from your research that you're the most curious about and see if you can start to narrow down your focus enough to write 2000-3000 words on it by reflecting on how the topic relates to you:
  • How am I involved directly with this topic?
  • Can I explore how this topic relates to the place I live, or a place I've lived in the past?
  • Did something happen recently concerning this topic that I can explore and thereby limit my scope?
  • Is there an aspect of this topic that I could focus on, rather than trying to tackle the whole thing?
For example, say I want to explore how industries effect the sustainability of species. That's a broad topic I could probably write a book or two on. However, I can narrow it down to something more the length of a chapter of a book by addressing it from where I live and through the things that effect me.

One thing you all know how much I love beauty and health products. Hand cream, make up, lipstick–you name it, I love it–mouth wash, throat spray, tooth-paste (I just can't stop, I love them all so much!). Which makes me wonder: are the ingredients for all my products harvested sustainability? Have Montana plants faced any problems because of health or beauty products? To help me focus, I might ask the following focusing question to guide my research: Do any of the health and beauty products I use effect plant species in Montana? Read Heather's essay "Copper and Green" this weekend and you'll find out.

The Kings of Sacramento
Sacramento, California has and always will be a town based around its sports teams. Therefore, last year when the town was confronted with the possibility of the NBA,Sacramento Kings leaving, the community was outraged. The city has grown to love the Kings over the past 25 years, especially in the 2000’s when they made it to the semi-finals and helped to put the city of Sacramento on the global map. So, why move a team that is so close to the hearts of Sacramento? Unfortunately, the arena they play in is now over 20 years old and falling apart; the King’s owners, Joe and Gavin Maloof are running out of money. It is time to find the funding and lay down the ground work for a new arena. In order to build an arena in Sacramento the city has to find money to help the Maloofs, find a new place for the arena, and then convince the city that the money they would be spending on the new arena would be profitable for the city itself. The Kings leaving would prove detrimental to the city as a whole.

Children are being swept away at night, taken from their families and their homes. Being forced by a man with power to kill and mutilate others of their kind, and of their age. The most powerful man forcing them to shoot their elders and fight for a cause they don’t see as right. The Uganda children being forced against their will. The same scenario has happened in prior years, but on our own accord. The Iraq children being forced to fight in their own military, against the American men in their country. Fighting against men they do not recognize with is a difficult task for these children. To change the way we conduct our military operations, we need to train rather than fight. As few as 100 American men sent to Uganda were able to train soldiers to protect the tens of thousands of children being targeted in their country (Russel). International involvement by the United States can potentially save lives, of children as young as infants, with little to nothing in comparison to the money we have to offer. We need to look to the Uganda incident as a model for how our country engages in military operations.

Since as long as I can remember, my aunts and uncles have been there for me every step of my life. When I was 7, my aunt’s partner was diagnosed with lung cancer. As you can imagine, this was a long, painful process for everyone involved. My aunt Carolyn was denied her partner’s life insurance because they were not recognized as a legal couple. The cost of a funeral fell on my aunt, to be paid out of pocket. When I broke my arm, I wanted Carolyn to be at my surgery the next day, and she was there.
Imagine having a family member in the hospital. They are on their death bed and the end is near. This person is the love of your life. But, you aren’t allowed to visit them, because you are a homosexual couple.  Why is it that with all the problems going on in the world; rape, murder, poverty, and more, all we can think of is not allowing gay people basic rights? We want to take away those rights and deny them what they deserve just because they are different? Montana is one of many states where gay marriage is not legal and I believe that this is a necessary change that needs to be made. I am originally from Washington where I am proud to say that gay marriage is now legalized. I couldn’t be happier for the state as a whole, but more importantly, my family members and friends that are gay can now legally be recognized as a married couple.

Occupy Logic

The front of the camp is covered in protest signs, “We are the 99%” or “Stop Corporate Greed.” Hundreds of tents are set up one or two main tents that house the food and cookware, several porta-potties have been set up. Hundreds of people have gathered around a speaker as he talks about the injustices that our society and government have allowed to happen.

"Don't Renigg 2012!"

Hey guys, one of my friends posted about a "racially charged sign" in Columbia Falls.  The sign, as well as bumper stickers the store was selling, read, "Don't Renigg in 2012."  I think it poses some interesting questions about racism in relation to free speech and how people react/don't react.

Here is a link to the conversation some of my friends are having on facebook about the sign (keep in mind, this conversation probably has a liberal bias): http://www.facebook.com/zacjperry/posts/350340725009368?comment_id=4356395&notif_t=like

Continuing the Discussion on Racism

Hi folks,

So we had to cut the discussion on racism short on Tuesday, but Jessie suggested the blog might be a good place to keep it up. So, if you're interested in continuing to talk, I'd like to hear everyones' thoughts. A few questions that linger in my mind:

Workshop Guide Complete Draft Op-Ed Tuesday 3/13

Remember: this is a complete draft workshop. Discuss mid draft details. Assess how far along the draft is and give suggestions for revision based on where the draft is at.As always, save grammar and structure for last unless the problems are huge, i.e. preventing you from discerning meaning.
Author, remain silent and take notes while your partners discuss your essay. Once they're finished, ask questions. Otherwise hold your tongue. If you feel like they aren't understanding or are missing the point of your essay, write down your questions but ask yourself: did I really convey that in the writing, or did I simply think I did?
For each draft do the following:
  1. Allow the author to ask questions. Someone in the group write down the questions. You'll explore them together in a moment.
  2. Summarize the draft as it stands. Paraphrase the argument by stating the major claim, the subclaims and any support given. If this is unclear, the author needs to work to find a thread or purpose. Try and help them articulate what interests them about the topic. What could the underlying purpose be? If they're having a hard time explaining why they're interested, suggest they look for a new topic and help them get to a new focusing question.
  3. Point out places where the argument wanes or is unclear or even contains fallacies. Is it way off track for the assignment? Then focus on getting it back on. Are there clear claims with strong and appropriate evidence? If not suggest some new claims and places to seek out evidence. Consult the CW to watch for fallacies.
  • Is the author writing for their own discovery, or simply because they were assigned to write an essay?
Suggest possible new directions to take in their argument. Does the argument need more research or more emotional appeal?
Who is the audience for this argument based on the evidence given?
Is this essay too big? Trying to do too much? Would it take a book to really address this issue?
  • Do you lose interest at any point? Should the author scrap sections of the essay and go in a new direction? If so, be clear about what should remain.
      4. Play devil's advocate. Pretend you disagree with the Op-Ed and try and argue against it. Author, this an     opportunity to try and address your opposition in your essay. Be sure to pay attention to how someone in opposition might approach your argument and see if you can head them off in later drafts of your essay.
      5. What did you enjoy? Describe what's working and address any questions the author may have brought up.
